Instruments

For the past thirty years, I have built architectural installations related to bird sound and bird extinction. I have performed in those installations on flutes, shakuhachi, clarinets, harpsichord, strings, and various hybrid instruments such as the Birdmachine, Birdrawingloves, Birdrawingtable, Violaire, Broominette, Flarinet, Windspinner and Panspinner. Later, the recordings from these sessions might be overlaid with other bird-inspired instruments in my studio, such as the Shengslider, Pianotable, Dopplermarimba, and prepared pianos. The invented instruments were inspired by performances with birds in aviaries, parks, and wild places throughout North America, Europe, Japan, Australia, and more recently, Colombia. Wherever I go, I focus on birds as one piece of a total acoustic and visual surround. Sometimes I join in, but listening is primary. If I do join in, my abiding aim is to blend in as seamlessly as possible, never losing sight or sound of the multi-dimensional avian sense of place in my all-too-human midst.
