Ornithologie / Schaduwen

(1996)

Ornithology/Shadows Ornithologie/Schaduwen (1996) was a collaborative project about bird extinction with Dutch eco-artist, Jeroen van Westen. The project traveled to four sites in the Netherlands in August 1996: The Weeribben National Park, Overijssel; Fries Museum of Natural History, Leeuwarden; Avifauna Aviary, Alphen a/d Rijn; Apollohuis Gallery, Eindhoven. At each site, the mapping of memory onto specific geographical, historical, architectural and psychological spaces gave shape to performances, installations and textual elements. Common to each location was Jeroen’s creation of a large format book of extinct bird species made with abstract gestures in ink and brush in performative synchrony with Michael playing a variety of flutes and Kevin Shea on percussion. The catalog from these performances includes a CD of performances recorded at the Pittsburgh Aviary and Avifauna.
