Sighting Wheel 2
(1986)
Sighting Wheel 2 is superimposed over an anti-aircraft bunker atop Sylt’s highest dune. As a kind of machine, it is prehistoric in its astronomical functions and medieval in its technology. As a zoetrope-in-reverse, similar to Sighting Wheel (1985), the viewer is again placed on a central rotating seat with a sighting tube aimed at 360 degrees of horizon. The military purpose of the anti-aircraft bunker is thus confronted and deflated through the act of observing the horizon of the surrounding landscape rather than engaging hemispherically with the sky as with an anti-aircraft machine gun.
